Architecturally inspired accessories | Made in Sydney
Philippa was created in early 2003 when Philippa Frecklington, 27 year old town planner and founder of Philippa, set about creating a range of architecturally inspired accessories for the modern woman. Her mission was simple - to create beautiful sculptures for the body.
Frecklington began by drawing inspiration from leading architects and designers (including Jorn Utzon and Frank Lloyd Wright). She admired their innovative approach to design and was determined to apply the same design principles to create her first collection - the Organic Collection.
In early 2004, Frecklington enlisted her husband to assist with the development of the first design - the Philippa Hair Cuff inspired by the Sydney Opera House. The initial breakthrough came after several months of working with clay models on the kitchen table of their Sydney townhouse. By developing a Magnetic Elastic (patent pending), they had discovered a way for women to wear interchangeable hair ornaments without needing to untie their hair. It was a revelation, both functionally and aesthetically. (Click here for more information about the Philippa Hair Cuff).
In late 2004 Philippa's architecturally inspired Hair Cuffs were launched in Sydney. They were immediately embraced by leading design stores, art galleries and fashion boutiques, all of which catered to a market of sophisticated buyers. As the Organic Collection grew, each design in the collection became renowned for its simplicity and functionality, and for Philippa's innovative use of rare earth magnets.
By late 2005 Philippa had grown its stockist base considerably and also expanded its Organic Collection to include bangles, necklaces, rings, earrings and barrettes. These designs were inspired by leading architectural icons from around the globe. The complete range of accessories was launched at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week in October 2005, where Philippa was spotted and selected to exhibit at New York Olympus Fashion Weekin September 2006.
Today Philippa has an extensive and loyal celebrity following and exports products to a global market of stylish women including Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. Philippa has exhibited at the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair, the Formland design exhibition and more recently at Accessories, The Show (New York).
Philippa's current markets include Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong and New Zealand, although the principals are developing markets in America, Japan and England.
